Some students hope to make quality grades in order to get to college next year. Then, there are student-athletes who strive to excel in a sport. They may even play a secondary sport to keep in shape for their best sport. Ormond local and Spruce Creek's Erica Brok plays both volleyball and soccer, stands out in both and she shines in the classroom.
Brok recently signed her commitment letter to Florida Atlantic University, becoming Volusia County's first Division I beach volleyball signee. Her resume in the sport deems her worthy of such feat.
She earned a starting position on the Lady Hawks volleyball team each of the past four seasons, leading the team to consecutive district titles and two Sweet 16 finishes in the last two years.
Playing with her AAU and club team, Brok has won state, region and national championships, and was named to the 2015 Indoor Phenom Watch List.
This past year, she was nominated as an American Volleyball Coaches Association Under Armour All-American.
Brok first met FAU's assistant coach Steve Grotowski — a former British beach volleyball player — at her very first beach volleyball tournament, when she was 13 years old. He had just returned from playing in the 2012 Olympics for Britain. His wife Capri Grotowski serves as FAU's head coach.
The "other" sport
In soccer Brok has also started all four years. She was voted Most Valuable Player on the team last season, leading the Hawks to ditrict runner-up. She helped the team reach the Elite Eight in 2014.
Academics
When she's not on the court or the field, Brok is handling business in the classroom. She currently has a 4.57 weighted GPA and ranks 20th out of 578 students. Brok is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, the Mu Alpha Theta (Math), an AAU Academic All-American for the last three years and a Global Young Innovators Initiative nominee.
Brok just kicked off her final season playing soccer with Spruce Creek, so she will be able to add to her already full resume before she takes the Division I sandlot for the Lady Owls.
