The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Palm Coast man following a robbery at Advance America located at 800 Belle Terre Parkway, Unit No. 212 in Palm Coast, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.
Deputies received a call at approximately 4:52 p.m. Nov. 17 to investigate a silent hold-up alarm at Advance America, which offers payday loans, title loans and installment loans.
Witnesses stated a man later identified as Michael Carr, 59, entered the store wearing a trench coat and stumbled over to a waiting area where he emptied a plastic container that contained pamphlets.
He then walked to the front counter and placed the empty plastic container on the counter and pulled out a silver handgun and ordered employees to fill the container with “green stuff.” After he did this, employees activated the silent hold-up alarm. At this time, Carr stated the gun was only a toy and he was only joking; however, employees felt as if they were being robbed.
While standing at the counter, two customers entered the business and Carr concealed the toy gun in his trench coat. He then told employees to help the other customers as he would wait for them to finish.
Carr sat down in the waiting area and began talking to another customer until deputies arrived.
Deputies entered the business and arrested Carr without incident.
Carr, who lives on Ryapple Lane in Palm Coast, has been charged with robbery and has been booked into the Flagler County Inmate Facility.
The city of Palm Coast has completed the second round of hurricane debris removal and is now in its final push to complete all cleanup in residential neighborhoods before Thanksgiving, according to a city of Palm Coast government news release. The city’s cleanup in commercial corridors is done.
In residential areas only, residents should put all remaining hurricane debris curbside by this weekend, with vegetative debris in one pile and construction/demolition debris such as fence panels in a second pile.
The goal is for the city’s special hurricane debris contractor, CrowderGulf, to complete collection of debris in large piles (greater than 4 cubic yards) by Tuesday, Nov. 22. This is for residential areas only; no additional collections will be made at commercial properties.
Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 23, debris in the amount of 4 cubic yards or less (bagged, canned or loose debris) will be collected by Waste Pro as part of Palm Coast’s regular weekly yard trash collection service.
Residents who have a debris pile larger than 4 cubic yards that has not been picked up as of the weekend of Nov. 19-20 are asked to call Palm Coast Customer Service at 386-986-2360 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, to arrange for pickup prior to Thanksgiving by CrowderGulf.
The Florida Association of County Engineers and Road Superintendents (FACERS) has selected Flagler County as its 2016 Public Works Department of the Year, according to a Flagler County government news release.
The award was presented, in part, because of the John Anderson widening project that accommodated bike lanes along the highway in addition to resurfacing and re-striping the entire road from State Road 100 south to the Volusia County line.
“The John Anderson Widening Project…is a wonderful example of how Public Works Departments work hard to improve their communities,” wrote Doug Gable, FACERS president in a letter addressed to Flagler County Engineer Faith Alkhatib. “Your dedication to the residents of Flagler County is to be commended and we are proud to recognize your efforts.”
Alkhatib, along with “other members of your team,” have been invited to attend an awards presentation on December 2 in Orlando.
“We have a great staff that works very hard on a variety of projects throughout Flagler County,” Alkhatib said. “I am very proud to be recognized by the FACERS organization.”
The Florida Department of Transportation granted Flagler County $1.74 million to complete the project. Because much of the work was completed in-house, there was no cost to Flagler County residents.
“This is a wonderful honor,” Flagler County Administrator Craig Coffey said. “All of our departments work very hard to improve Flagler County’s amenities for our residents and visitors.”
The Florida Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting to address long-term improvement strategies being developed as part of a feasibility study for the section of State Road A1A from South of S. 28th Street to South of Osprey Drive in Flagler County, according to a city of Flagler Beach government news release.
The public meeting will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15 at Flagler Beach City Hall at 105 S. 2nd Street. The meeting will be an open house with an ongoing loop presentation.
Individual elected officials may attend the meeting but will not take any action or hold any votes.
The study, which builds on the recently constructed short-term improvements, is evaluating a range of long-term improvement options for S.R. A1A.
It is being conducted in association with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Ultimately, the study will conclude with a range of options that will be further assessed by local, state and federal agencies.
The purpose of the public meeting is to present initial findings related to existing and future conditions and to receive input from interested stakeholders.
