The School Board of Volusia County elected Melody Johnson as chairman and Linda Cuthbert as vice chairman at its Nov. 15 organizational meeting.
Passes for Volusia County beaches are available for 2017 at volusiabeachpass.com. Volusia County has revamped the annual passes, making them renewable so toll attendants will no longer need to scrape old passes off windshields each year. The new passes are designed to last several years and can be mounted on the exterior of the windshield, according to a press release from the county.
“The passes make great holiday gifts,” said Jessica Winterwerp, Volusia County Coastal director.
Residents and visitors with “2016” written on their current pass are asked to remove the sticker from their windshield before going to a toll booth to purchase their new renewable annual pass. If it states “Renewable” on the pass, the pass is already one of the renewable ones.
The following Leisure Services facilities will be closed for floor refinishing and maintenance and the Thanksgiving holiday:
Closed Nov. 19-27: South Ormond Neighborhood Center, 176 Division Ave.; and Nova Community Center, 440 N. Nova Road
Closed Nov. 21-27: Senior Center, 351 Andrews St.
The Ormond Beach Sports Complex will be closed to the public from Dec. 21 through Jan. 1 for facility and field maintenance.
Santa’s making his list and checking it twice at Volusia County’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Division. As part of an annual tradition, recreation employees will send personalized postcards from Santa to children up to age 12. Parents can have their children added to Santa’s mailing list by sending the child’s full name and address to [email protected] by Dec. 12.
Votran will not operate bus service Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24. SunRail connector routes and Gold Service also will be nonoperational Nov. 24.
Votran's Gold Service works closely with area dialysis centers to adjust their patient schedules on holidays, according to a press release from the county. Gold Service customers who will not need transportation over the holiday weekend are asked to notify Votran.

There will be no garbage or recycling collection on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24. Garbage normally picked up on Thursday will be picked up Friday. Garbage normally picked up Friday will be picked up Saturday. Call 788-8890.
The deadline to register for FEMA assistance is Dec. 16, according to a press release from the county. Only one registration per household is necessary. Residents can register by calling 800-621-3362.
Disaster Recovery Centers serving Hurricane Matthew survivors will be closed Nov. 24. The DRC will reopen Nov. 25 at 9 a.m. at Florida Dept. of Health, 1845 Holsonback Drive, Daytona Beach.
