Local powerlifter breaks national records
Retired military vet and Palm Coast local Shawn Roop recently broke four national powerlifting records at the Orlando Barbell APF Southern States Championship Meet in Oviedo.
Roop, 46, competed in the age 45-49 242-pound weight division and broke two deadlifts, a bench press and a total weight record. His records are as follows:
bench pressed - 197.5 kg/435.2 pounds
dead lift class (with wraps) 295 kg/650.2 pounds
dead lift raw (without wraps) 295 kg/650.2 pounds
total amount lifted classic (with wraps) 720 kg/1,587 pounds.
"The great thing about it (being the record holder) is, if you have no one else to beat, you can work on beating your personal best," Roop said. "I knew I could break them, but now I want world records."
Roop had quit lifting in 1999 but returned to the sport two years ago this month. He will get his chance to break world records at the APF Raw Nationals, which will be held in May, in Orlando.
