Fresh off of his 10th Olympics as NBC broadcasting's equipment manager, Billy Gahagan met with Seabreeze admiration and was hired as the new athletics director, replacing Stephen Gold who had recently retired.
Gahagan is no stranger to the school or community. He's coached football and/or baseball at Seabreeze, Spruce Creek and Father Lopez Catholic, helping kids get into college. He taught and held other responsibilities at Seabreeze. Gahagan also hosted Volusia's High School Huddle on WDSC (working with Steve Allen), and he has worked as the physical education teacher at Osceola Elementary School. He also co-founded Axios Sports Management, a Florida-based sports agency.
"I was thrilled and honored that they would want me to be in a position like this," Gahagan said. "I really enjoy athletics as a whole, and it's neat that I'm going to have a hand in helping coaches organize their schedules and their awards and helping them purchase things for their athletes."
Gahagan has been assisted with his transition into his new position by Seabreeze sports staff members Tonia Morgan, the activities director, former athletics director Jerry Chandler, coaches Kerry Kramer and Anthony Campanella.
"Between the four of them," he said, "I'm always getting constant reminders. They keep me on my toes. Having those four around have made it easy for me; they're awesome."
Having worked 10 Olympics, Gahagan believes his experience with the largest sporting event in the world has sharpened his organizational skills and will enable him to succeed as the AD.
"When it comes to the Olympics, You have to be meticulous about things," he said. "The fact that I can help organize at that level makes it that much easy for me to do what I now have to do at Seabreeze."
DID YOU KNOW? Billy Gahagan has won four Emmy Awards for his work as an NBC broadcasting equipment manager.
Say that again: "The fact that I can help organize at that level (Olympics) makes it that much easy for me to do what I now have to do at Seabreeze."
