Halifax Humane Society is asking our community to serve as “Storm Troopers”and host an adoptable pet to ride out Hurricane Matthew until Oct. 9. The animal shelter will be closing its doors tomorrow at noon, and the staff hopes that the animals will be able to stay inside a home instead of the kennels that are indoor and outdoor.

Willing and able families in safe locations are asked to stop by the shelter anytime during open hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow to select a dog, cat or kitten. Animals will be returned to the shelter Sunday, with flexibility.

However, if  Hurricane Matthew allows you to fall in love with your new friend, you are welcome to adopt the animal from HHS.

The shelter will only be operational for animals needing to be returned to owners due to Hurricane Matthew. Halifax Humane Society will not be evacuating for the storm at this time, but will take all proper measures to ensure the comfort and safety of our animals.

HHS encourages the families of “Storm Troopers” to share their storm guests via social media pages using #HHSStormTrooper The society is currently accepting donations of food and water at this time for the animals that will be remaining at the shelter.

For information on preparation for the hurricane and information on where to evacuate with your animal please visit HalifaxHumaneSociety.org.
