Palm Coast is receiving reports of sewage systems backing up into showers and tubs. Whether you are affected depends on which type of wastewater treatment system your house has, and whether you have power.
Residents with PEP tanks and those with the traditional gravity sewer systems and no electricity should limit the amount of water and sewage going down the drain and toilets, since electric power is needed to pump the sewage back to the wastewater treatment plant.
“In Palm Coast there are two types of wastewater (sewage) systems,” said Cindi Lane, communications and marketing manager for the city of Palm Coast. “There is the PEP system and the traditional gravity sewer system.”
Residents who have the green PEP tanks buried in their yard, and who have not had power restored, may find sewage backing up in their showers and tubs.
“If you have a PEP system, and are experiencing backup, call the city at 986-2360, and you will be put on the top of the list for response,” Lane said.
The city will send out trucks equipped with specialized generators to drain the tank. Lane emphasized that house generators CAN NOT be used for this and residents should not attempt to drain the PEP tank.
“We have a dozen tank trucks to empty the PEP tanks, and more are on the way,” Lane said.
When the power comes back on, PEP customers may hear an alarm. Residents can silence the alarm by going to the panel mounted on the side of their home, by the tank, and pressing the alarm silence button. Please call the city at 986-2360 after doing this.
“The gravity systems are OK for now, but if the pump station doesn’t have power, backup could occur,” Lane said.
Things you should do:
1. Do not do laundry
2. Rinse off with the hose outside instead of taking a shower
3. Flush only when necessary
