While trees provide scenery and shade to many residents, when a hurricane hits they can be big threats to property — and life.
At least eight homes in Ormond Beach were damaged by trees during Hurricane Matthew, including Greg Muller who was home with family friends, his wife, a dog and his 7-month-old baby.
"It sounded like someone drove a semi-truck into the side of my house," he said. "The baby started crying, my friend's dog started barking and that just made him cry more. I'm just glad everyone was safe."
Thankfully, the tree fell in the master bedroom of the house, where nobody was at the time. The family rode out the rest of the storm at the opposite side of the house where they were less likely to get hit by a tree. It's a good thing they did, because not too long after, another tree fell right next to the first one. It broke the edge of the roof.
"A tree from my neighbor's yard fell into mine and took down some power lines," Muller said. "Now there's dangling power lines in my front yard."
Muller lives in the area surrounding Ormond Beach Middle School, where he says a lot of trees came down.
"There are so many oak trees around here," he said. "They did a lot of damage.
