Burglaries, batteries reported in Palm Coast in wake of Hurricane Matthew

Burglars broke into homes, a gunsmith's shop and a wireless store.

After Hurricane Matthew struck, burglars broke into Palm Coast homes, stealing cash and electronics. There were also fights, assaults and batteries, and a number of arrests. Three businesses — Robert Weidig Gunsmith at 15 Utility Drive, Cricket Wireless at 1499 Palm Coast Parkway NW, and the Mobil gas station at 5935 E. S.R. 100 — were burglarized, with the Mobil station burglary still under investigation the evening of Oct. 11. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has asked anyone with information about the crimes to call the Sheriff’s Office at 386-313-4911; or, to remain anonymous and eligible for a reward of up to $1,000, to call Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 1-888-277-8477. Here’s a roundup of what happened in Palm Coast and Bunnell, summarized from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office’s commanders’ reports. (The Palm Coast Observer has not yet received the official reports that would provide more detailed information: Sheriff’s Office staff have been busy with storm recovery.)

The evening and night of Friday, Oct. 7:

Deputies were dispatched to check out an unsecured front door on Radcliffe Drive. The front door was damaged, but deputies didn’t know if anything was stolen. 

On  Llewellyn Trail, a woman struck a victim over the head with a wine bottle, then fled while firing a revolver into the air. Deputies arrested the woman, and found the gun next to a fence.

A man grabbed a pregnant woman around the neck during a fight at their home on Parkview Drive. The man was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery.

A man was asleep at a home on Eastgate Lane and heard the glass of the sliding glass door shatter. He heard someone moving around inside the house. It took the man about 30 minutes to get out of the house and call 911 from a neighbor’s home. Deputies deployed a police dog, but, with the delay and the stormy weather, couldn’t find a track. 

A man was in his living room on Prattwood Drive when his power went out. He assumed that his generator needed fuel but when he went out to his front porch to check, the generator had been stolen.

The morning and afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 8:

A Blakeport Lane resident evacuated, and someone broke into the empty house and stole several TVs.

On Papaya Street, in Bunnell, a man woke up at about 7:15 a.m. and saw that someone had stolen all of the guns from his gun cabinet. The thief also stole a whiskey jug containing about $400 in quarters. There were no signs of forced entry.

Someone broke into a Blakefield Drive residents’ home while the resident was evacuated, and stole numerous electronics.

On Radcliffe Drive, a man’s home was burglarized while he was evacuated. The thief appeared to have pried open front door. The thief or thieves stole a 2011 Toyota Camry, as well as jewelry and electronics. 

A Radcliffe Drive resident reported that a thief burglarized her home during the evacuation. The thief smashed through a rear sliding glass door and stole electronics. 

On Grove Street, in Bunnell, a woman returned after evacuation and found that a thief had stolen her TVs and guns. Report made.

Someone broke into an Eastgate Lane house through a rear sliding door, and ransacked the bedroom. The homeowner had not retuned, so deputies weren’t sure what was stolen. 

The evening and night of Saturday, Oct. 8: 

Someone stole a Pine Tree Drive resident’s trailer, which he’d left parked on Old Kings Road the night of Oct. 1.

On Webster Lane, a man’s son-in-law jumped out to scare the man as he stepped out of the bathroom. The father-in-law got “very upset” and yelled at the son-in-law, then grabbed the younger man around the throat, and came out of a bedroom with a gun and threw it on a table, the son-in-law told deputies. Deputies arrested the father-in-law. 

A teenager got into a fight with several of his family members on Clove Avenue in Bunnell. The teen stabbed an older family member several times. The victim was hospitalized, and survived. 

A Bud Hollow Drive family’s home was ransacked while they evacuated. 

Someone called to report two suspicious persons on Brookside Drive. Deputies found a teenager believed to be involved with car break-ins. The teen was turned over to a parent, and deputies expected to prepare charges.

On Dogwood Street, in Bunnell, someone sent a text message stating that she would be dead soon and to tell everyone she loved them. The person who received the text reported it to law enforcement. Deputies searched the area and tried to ping the cell phone from which the text was sent, but did not get a result. The person who sent the text was entered into state and national databases as missing. The person who sent the text was later found, and told deputies that the person who reported it had misunderstood the message. 

The morning and afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 9:

A Blakefield Drive resident reported that his home was burglarized while he was evacuated. The thief had pried open a garage door and stolen a TVs, XBox games, a power pack and an XBox 360.

A thief broke into the Cricket Wireless on Palm Coast Parkway NW. Someone with a key to the business arrived to check on it and found the back door propped open. The thief appeared to to have forced open an interior door, and stole two cash bags, plus petty cash. 

A neighboring business owner found the door to Robert Weidig Gunsmith on Utility Drive open. It was clear that someone had forced their way into the business. Deputies spoke to the owner, who verified that 41 guns had been stolen. 

On Clubhouse Drive, someone reported that a generator was stolen from their home, where it had been placed next to the garage. 

Someone broke into a Pine Haven Drive home through a bedroom window and a stole a camera.

The evening and night of Sunday, Oct. 9:

A man was leaving for work, and walked back inside his Sederholm Path home briefly while leaving his 2016 Chevy Silverado running in the driveway. As he walked back into the house, someone stole the truck. Deputies tracked the man’s cell phone, which he’d left in the truck, to Florida Hospital Flagler. Two people seen walking away fro the truck were arrested. 

A man reported to deputies that his son came home to their Wasserman Drive home intoxicated. The man’s wife picked up the son’s cup of booze and poured out the alcohol. The son got mad and punched the man in the face, the man said to deputies. Deputies arrested the son and charged him with battery.
