For a second consecutive season, the Mainland Buccaneers (7-0,3-0) showed the Matanzas Pirates who runs the 6A District-13, shutting them out 41-0 on Friday, Oct. 14, at Matanzas. Last year, Mainland beat Matanzas 43-0.
Both teams went into the game undefeated and highly confident, but it was Mainland who played its normal game to get the familiar win result.
After both defenses made their presences felt early on, Mainland quarterback Denzel Houston returned a punt 52 yards for the opening score.
In the second quarter, on 4th-and-1, C.J. Wilson broke up the middle 61 yards for the touchdown that put the Bucs up 14-0 at halftime.
On their first possession of the second half, Houston found Brian Jenkins for a 12-yard touchdown pass to go up 21-0. And, on Mainland's following drive, Houston called his number when he fumbled the snap, picked up the ball and ran it in from five yards.
A few seconds before the fourth quarter, Houston connected with Tank Dell on a three-yard hitch pass, and Bell took it 60 yards for a score.
On the very last play of the game, Matanzas, trying to score points, threw the ball into the end zone, but Cyrus Fagan intercepted the pass and raced 104 yards for the final touchdown.
The Bucs will next play New Smyrna Beach at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at New Smyrna.
