Students wanted to personally thank workers for their help during Hurricane Matthew.
The kids visited FPL workers, city managers and mayors, among others.
Calvary Christian Academy students recently went the extra mile to personally thank local hurricane relief workers — they bought them breakfast.
Second and third-grade elementary students and members of the Student Government Association took a bus Oct. 17 to visit FPL service centers, public works departments, parks and recreation departments and fire and police stations in Port Orange, Ormond Beach, and Daytona Beach. Thank-you cards and donations of breakfast sandwiches, snacks, bottled waters and gift certificates were collected by students and distributed to workers.
According to Guidance Counselor Michelle Butler, a couple of students also shared some incredible stories of their hurricane experiences with the workers.
"One student told of how he and his family were in the house weathering the hurricane when a rotted tree crashed through the middle of their home," she said. "Thankfully they were in a part of the home away from where the tree came through and no one was hurt. Another student shared how a big tree snapped at the root and fell in the backyard covering their pool and pool deck. One other student had a large part of their roof caved in at their apartment complex."
Before heading back to school, the students dropped off remaining items to service workers in the field who were still working to restore our communities.
"It was important to our students and our school that we showed our gratitude not only with words," said Bulter, "but through action."
