Your average "girls night out" is usually held at a bar or a club — not an auto mechanic shop. But the group of 26 women who attended Honest-1's first-ever Ladies' Night, didn't come for the free drinks, they came for the free lesson in car maintenance.
"Part of our job is to educate the customers about what kind of work we're doing on their car," said owner Eric Sewell. "Quite a few people come in, especially women, who want us to teach them more."
So Sewell created the event as a way for women to learn more about their cars and what they need to do to get the most life out of them. Held Oct. 20 at the shop, located at 720 S. Nova Road in Ormond Beach, the event was led by service advisors Sharon Sewell, Kristine Minimi, and Yasmeen St. Clair. With a strict "girls only" rule, Sewell said they had to turn away a few men who wanted to join.
"About 65 to 70% of our clientele is women," he said. "They're the ones asking questions. Men simply just don't ask that many questions, even if they don't know the answers. But the more people know about their cars, the more they can feel comfortable about the work that's being done on them."
The first class covered topics like how to jump-start a car, the different fluids in a car and how often they need to be changed, how to pick a good auto repair shop, and the different dashboard lights and what they mean. Sewell said he wants to make the event quarterly, with the next one being held Jan. 26.
"The auto repair industry has a bad rap," Sewell said. "Part of our mission statement is to dispel that label."
