Some families spend quality time around the dinner table. Others used their combined creative skills to replicate a restaurant kitchen where the chef cooks human legs for dinner. It just depends .
Chrissie Kimble has been a haunted house visionary since 2012, when she created a creepy experience for the students of Pine Trail Elementary out of unused portable. When Volusia County Schools took the portable back, students were left without a haunted house — until Kimble's father, Jerry Janaro stepped in.
"She had all these decorations they weren't going to use," said Janaro, who's on the board of Ormond Mainstreet. "So I presented in to Mainstreet , and now I'm the chair of the haunted house."
Chrissie Kimble helps supply all the decorations and come up with the spooky characters for the house. Janaro assists his son-in-law, Ken Kimble builds the maze out of PVC pipe inside one of the vacant stores in the Granada Plaza. The Kimble kids, 10-year-old Delaney, 9-year-old Lucy and 5-year-old Finn, dress up as characters and do anything else they can to help out.
"Ken is very creative with the lighting and the pipes," Janaro said. "There are hundreds that go together to make this thing, and he's able to knock it out pretty quick. We have a great time doing this."
Ormond "Maim" Street Haunted House
From 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., Oct. 28-29 at the Granada Plaza, 177 E. Granada Blvd. Both scary and non-scary visits with a host of ghouls and goblins. Tickets are $2. Timed tickets are available online so that no one has to "die waiting." Visit ormondbeachmainstreet.com/events.
Haunted Hay Ride
7:30 p.m. at 6130 State Road 11, De Leon Springs. About 12 minutes outside Ormond Beach city limits. Cost is $10. Adult supervision. Meet the animals for free from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 30. Call 212-1199.
Haunted Brewhouse
5 to 11 p.m. Oct. 29 at Ormond Brewing Company, 301 Division Ave., Unit 15. You have nothing to fear as long as you have beer. Come join us for a creepy night filled with scares, beers, food and three bands Which includes Dema, Holy Human and Wounded Shadow. Costume contest and tours through the haunted brewhouse. Admission is $6 which includes a free pint.
Rockefeller Revisited
6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 29 at The Casements. A Halloween alternative program for all ages. Music, light refreshments and a glimpse of what things might have looked like here in 1931. Several guest re-enactors that will be waiting on the candlelit tour. Cost is $5. Children 12 and under are free.
