The Mainland Buccaneers' (9-0) most recent 70-7 drubbing of the Seabreeze Sandcrabs (1-7) has created much conversation about the two programs' past, present and future. One seems to be peaking while the other is on a steady decline.
Six years ago, Seabreeze celebrated its last victory over the Bucs. Since then, Mainland has owned the crosstown rivalry.
When it comes to the Sandcrabs' alumni, they are not pleased. Ormond Pride president/coach Brian Colubiale played with the Seabreeze for three years in the late '80s. Seabreeze won each of those contests. Now, as he attends the rivalry to support the Bucs —due to his son Jason — it hasn't been easy to watch for him.
"It's not a rivalry and hasn't really been in the last three years," he said. "Being a coach to so many kids in the area, it hurts to see games like that, especially when its your school you graduated from. No coach likes games like that."
In the last several years, the Bucs have only reloaoded their roster, while the Sandcrabs' top players have sought greener pastures. Has Daytona seen the last of the half-century crosstown rivalry?
