A driver with a gun threatened another driver and fired a round into the air at the intersection of U.S. 1 and S.R. 100, the victim told deputies. (Image from Google Maps.)
A tailgater threatened another driver and the driver’s passenger with a handgun Aug. 30 after the driver break-checked the tailgater, the victims told deputies.
The driver, a 40-year-old Flagler Beach man, was driving east on S.R. 100 at around 9 p.m. when his passenger, a 33-year-old woman, noticed that a car was following closely behind theirs, and remarked on it to the man.
The tailgater was a young blond man driving a two-door Cadillac with dark tinted windows, they later told deputies.
As the Flagler Beach man headed over the U.S. 1 overpass on S.R. 100 West, he tapped his breaks “to alert the driver behind him,” according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office case report.
The tailgater sped up and passed on the Flagler Beach man’s left.
As the two cars came to a stop in the roadway, the Flagler Beach man pulled alongside the tailgater’s car. The tailgater held up a silver semiautomatic handgun, pulled the slide back and loaded a round, then asked the Flagler Beach man and his passenger if they “wanted some.”
At the intersection of S.R. 100 and U.S.1, the tailgater held the gun out the window and fired a round into the air before turning north on U.S. 1, the Flagler Beach man said.
The Flagler Beach man tried to catch up to the tailgater to get his tag number, but he ended up in front of the tailgater’s Cadillac again around Whiteview Parkway, and the Cadillac began following him.
The Flagler Beach man got to the intersection of Whippoorwill Drive and Whirlaway Drive and heard what he thought was another gunshot, then got away from the Cadillac at Wheatfield Drive and went to a local house whose residents let the couple use the phone to call 911.
Deputies searched for the tailgater’s car but didn’t find it.
