I've never been much of an office person. Being confined inside four walls from 9 to 5 with no more than a mere half hour for lunch is my nightmare. I've worked a few of those kinds of jobs, and let's just say I took a lot of bathroom breaks just to get a change in scenery.
That's why the Ormond Beach Observer and I were such a perfect fit. My job requires me to be in the community and not stuck at my desk checking Faceboook every five minutes. Because of this, for the past two years I've worked here I'm hardly ever in the office. And while most people get it, it has caused a few problems.
One time I pranked our Advertising Account Manager Josh McPherson by rearranging a bunch of stuff on his desk. He got me back the next day by covering my entire desk and chair with newspaper. Only, I didn't see it until about a week and a half later, and he thought I was really mad at him.
But times have changed, and thanks to a major change in scenery — and the fact that I'm now in walking distance to all my favorite resturants — I'm in the office like, all the time.
The Ormond Beach Observer moved! We're now on the second floor of First Green Bank, 175 W. Granada Blvd., in what is arguably the coolest office in Ormond Beach. Rather than have a bunch of closed off offices that literally no one ever used, we opted for one big, open space with just a conference room for privacy. And it's currently not very private because it doesn't have doors yet.
Instead of individual desks, we all share two huge, beautiful tables so we can exchange ideas and funny cat videos while we're working. We've been in the new space for a few weeks now, and not everything is finished. We're still waiting on some more chairs, lockers to keep our stuff in and bean bags that I'm hoping to buy and add to the office without anyone noticing.
One of the harder struggles I've faced during my career is finding the right atmosphere to work and write in, and thanks to this move from our big boss, John Walsh (yes I'm totally brown nosing, hush), I've finally found it.
So come check out our new digs — and prepare to feel slightly jealous — at our first ever News & Brews event. Held at 4 p.m. Sept. 9, we'll have food from Schmancy Pops, Holy Schnitz Food Truck, and Southern State of Mind, have a brew with us and First Green Bank, and take a photo with the #ObserverMobile, a.k.a the thing I can totally drive.
