Flagler Palm Coast at Mainland: Mainland wins 43-0. In the last two seasons, Que’Shaun Byrd’s numbers have dropped, due to the inconsistent play and inexperience around him. It seems that if he gains anything on a run, it’s because he has shaken off several defenders and made another miss. On the other hand, Mainland’s defense will feast on quarterback Darrell Thomas’ inexperience. The Bucs appear to have no weaknesses, and quarterback Denzel Houston appears to only get better. He has a slew of receivers to throw to, and running back C.J. Wilson is a touchdown machine. The Bucs will find the end zone early and often Friday night at Municipal Stadium.
Father Lopez at Atlantic (Port Orange): Atlantic wins 30-20. The Green Wave is well-rested, due to the cancellation of their last week game. But, having to travel to a newly-built Atlantic team, I believe the Sharks will give them fits. In their preseason game against New Smyrna Beach, the Sharks put the area on notice that they will not go winless this season, winning by 19 points behind a powered offense and fast defense.
Father Lopez still struggles with inconsistency. The Green Wave often show themselves as the football Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and once again, they will reveal their bad sad to begin the season with an 0-2 record.
Matanzas vs. Mount Dora: Matanzas wins 17-10. Matanzas, too, cancelled its game last week, so the Pirates are looking to gain more early-season momentum with a second win. Matanzas edged the Hurricanes 9-7 in a defensive battle last season, and I believe the same will take place this year.
Though not perfect, Matanzas showed it has just as much defensive talent as last year, and Philip Moultrie has become a game-changing playmaker. Mount Dora will have problems stopping all of the Pirates’ weapons.
Seabreeze: bye week.
