The two-story building at 1 S. Kings Road has had a lot of names over the years: Omega 40, Club Boom, Varsity Athletic Club, Elite World Class Fitness Center and finally, Evolution Health Club. And Pat Fanning has been there through them all.
He started out as a just a member of Omega 40, a popular racquetball club in the 1980s that at one time had as many as 3,000 members. It was there that Fanning shared memories, birthdays and bonded over beer with fellow members. It was a community first and a fitness club second.
“There are so many people in this town who met their husbands and wives here in the 80s,” he said. “And so many kids grew up here playing racquetball.”
It was nostalgia of the building that motivated Fanning to take over the business with many names and give it one more: Evolution Health Club.
Fanning has been running the show with his son, Ryan Fanning, and other managing owner Josh Bevilacqua for two years. While Fanning really loves the building he spent so much of his life in, come this October the club is moving to 495 S. Nova Road, Suite #113.
“We’re going to focus on our personal training and group fitness, like the boxing bootcamps,” Fanning said. “We’ve got new equipment coming that we haven’t had before, like stairclimbers.”
Starting Oct. 1, the health club will be in the new building, and Fanning hopes current and future clients will make the move with them.
“The fitness world is constantly evolving, and that's what we do,” he said. “It’s the life we love and live.”
