The Mainland Buccaneers (5-0) took down the Dr. Phillips Panthera 42-21 Friday, Sept. 23, at Daytona Municipal Stadium.
The Bucs trailed early, after Dr. Phillips scored on a 29-yard touchdown pass. Mainland would rebound when Denzel Houston connected with Tank Bell for a 16-yard score. A few drives later, Houston, on 3rd-and-15, turned a broken play into a 71-yard touchdown run to put Mainland up.
On their next drive, the Bucs scored from the "Rhino" formation, which pits big defensive Kevon McCrary in the fullback position. He punched it in from a yard out after Brian Jenkins returned a punt for 60 yards to the one-yard line. Dr. Phillips returned the ensuing kick return for a touchdown.
With less than two minutes remaining in the half, Houston found Bell again for a touchdown, this time from nine yards out. And just before the end of the third quarter, Houston and Jenkins connected on a 40-yard bomb, and then they linked up for a three-yard score.
Mainland's D'Andre McMillan scored the Bucs' final touchdown in the fourth, and Dr. Phillips scored a final touchdown on the Bucs' second team defense.
Kicker Noah Gettman finished a perfect 6-for-6 on extra points for the Bucs.
