Man conned seeking a puppy online.

Sept. 13

Puppy scam

2:10 p.m. — 1500 Block of West Granada Boulevard

Theft. The victim wanted to buy a certain breed of puppy and found a website by using Google search. He began corresponding by email with the suspect.

The victim did a Western Union transfer for $790. He then received an email saying the puppy would be flown to the airport where he could pick it up. A supposed transport company emailed the victim and told him to send $980 for insurance that would be refunded when he picked up the puppy.

The victim became suspicious and emailed the suspect that he would drive to their location in Virginia and pick up the puppy. The suspect said she no longer had the puppy, and the transport company had it.

The victim then looked up the address of the breeder and found it to be a convenience store. He called police and reported a fraud.

 

Sept. 14

Should be easy to spot

10:13 a.m. — 400 Block of Hand Avenue

Theft. The victim said a concrete elephant statue was stolen from his yard. It was identified as being three feet tall, weighing 70 pounds, with a small turtle on top of a purple ball. A be-on-the-lookout was issued.

 

Sept. 16

Trying to help?

1:34 a.m. — 1400 Block of Oak Forest Drive

Burglary of a Dwelling, Possession of Narcotics. The victim heard the alarm on his wife’s car go off so looked out the window and saw a male in the car. The male ran down the street.

Check books, credit cards and $2,500 in cash were taken from the car, in addition to other items.

While officers were talking to the victims, a sheriff’s deputy advised that he had a suspect nearby that was sweating profusely and was out of breath.

The officers took the victim to where the suspect was detained, and he identified the suspect as the one he saw in his car.

In a search, officers found a plastic bag with pills in the suspect’s pocket. The suspect said he found it and was going to throw it away when he had a chance.

Asked why he was at the victim’s residence, the suspect said he was walking by and saw someone by the victim’s car so he confronted him. He said when the victim came outside he got scared and ran.

The stolen items were not found. The suspect was arrested.

 

Sept. 19

Porch sitting

9:16 a.m. — 300 Block of Rio Pinar Drive

Loitering or Prowling. The victim said she found the suspect sleeping on her porch. When confronted, the suspect said she just sat down for a minute and fell asleep. She then left the area.

The officer found the suspect on the porch of another residence. As the officer approached, he could see her slightly opening her eyes to look at him.

Asked if she lived there or knew the owners of the house, she said she did not. After being read her Miranda rights, she was asked if she understood them and she said no. Asked what she didn’t understand, she said she didn’t understand why he was reading them to her.

The officer said he was conducting an investigation, and she said that’s not how you conduct an investigation. She then said she understood her rights and would answer questions.

She said she was waiting on the homeowners to come back because they said they were going to help her but she could not describe them.

The homeowner said he did not know the suspect. A person inside the house said she was scared because the suspect looked into a window.

The suspect could not provide a reason for her presence at the house so she was arrested for loitering or prowling.
