The Planning Board recommended approval for a special exception for a ground sign, called a “monument” sign, to be 10-feet tall, rather than eight-feet tall, as required in the city code. The owners of the Mobil Food Mart, at the corner of S. Yonge St. and West Granada Boulevard, made the request because a traffic control box, installed by FDOT, blocks the view of the sign.
Also, FDOT, in 2010, created a dedicated turn lane at the corner, using eminent domain to decrease the buffer for the business. As a result, the sign partially blocks the view of traffic for vehicles exiting the gas station onto eastbound Granada Boulevard. The planned new sign will be narrower to provide a better view of traffic.
A tree on the property also blocks the sign, and the owners have the option of trimming or moving the tree.
The City Commission will make the final decision on the special exception in a meeting tentatively set for Oct. 18.
Florida Hospitals East Florida Region, which comprises Volusia and Flagler counties, has been selected to participate in a project with the Association of Community Cancer Centers to address disparities in cancer care for vulnerable populations.
The ACCC Optimal Care Coordination Model for Lung Cancer Patients on Medicaid project will develop a care coordination model to leverage effective partnerships among cancer programs and practices, community organizations, patients and primary care and specialty providers, according to a press release. The three-year project is funded by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation.
Studies show patients with lung cancer covered by Medicaid have poorer outcomes, including higher incidence rates, later stage at diagnosis, and poorer survival rates.
“Not only is this program important on a national level, but it is important to our patients in Flagler and Volusia counties because the incidence of lung cancer is higher in our local communities, compared to national and state rates,” said Imee Unto, Florida Hospital East Florida Region cancer services administrator.
