One Ormond Beach woman was arrested April 6 in an undercover Volusia County Sheriff's Officer investigation of prostitution on Backpage.com.
Prostitutes who advertise in the escort section of the website backpage.com were targeted, and three women were arrested along with two men charged as accomplices for driving women to the meeting location.
The operation was led by detectives in the West Volusia Narcotics Task Force, and they were assisted by several other units along with the East Volusia Narcotics Task Force, which is a multi-agency task force comprised of detectives from the VCSO and the Ormond Beach, South Daytona and New Smyrna Beach police departments.
Once the appointment was made with the women, they were instructed to meet what they thought were customers at a local hotel. But the “customers” were actually undercover detectives. As soon as the sex-for-money deal was negotiated, the women were arrested. In one case, a defendant’s cousin drove her to the hotel because she had promised to pay him $40. Another man drove one of the women to the hotel because she owed him money.
The defendants and their charges are as follows:
