Sometimes humane societies receive updates about animals that have been adopted. This was the case recently at the Halifax Humane Society. The news was bitter-sweet, the dog had died of lymphoma, but not before he realized what a loving home could be.
The letter came from the dog’s adopter, who asked only to be identified as “Jim.” Jim had adopted Lona on March 31, 2012, a black and white hound mix. Lono died almost five years to the day later, March 22, 2017.
Jim had a special request for the shelter, to spread a small amount of ashes that he included, throughout the grounds of the humane society, saying he wanted “a part of Lono to always be where he originally came from.” According to HHS outreach director Barry KuKes this is not an uncommon request.
"I gave him my love and the best life I could for those five years,” Jim said in his letter, “We lived the last two years and four months in a 22-foot fifth wheel RV exploring the upper Olympic Peninsula among the beautiful fir trees in Washington State."
His letter continued, "I know Lono is in Heaven with God now and he looks down kindly upon all who were his friend. Thank you for the chance to volunteer at HHS and for the chance to adopt Lono Hound dog and be his friend and adopted dad."
HHS CEO, Miguel Abi-hassan has written back to Jim assuring him that Lono's ashes would be a part of the HHS forever, and thanked him on behalf of the staff for the care and love Jim had given the dog.
