Flagler Knights win divisional championship
In the organization’s third year, the Flagler Knights (6-4) used its final regular season game to win their first ever North Division championship with a 14-6 win over the Jacksonville X-man on Saturday, April 9, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
Quarterback Quinn Bell and the Knights’ defense — the league’s best — led Flagler in the win. On 4th-and goal, Bell scrambled to avoid several defenders before throwing in the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown pass to Romone Hollins. On the Knights’ ensuing drive, Bell scrambled for a 25-yard touchdown run, and the team converted its two-point conversion play.
The Knights won their final game of the season their first two years to get into the playoffs. As divisional champs, they will host their first ever home playoff game against an opponent TBD at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 29, OBSC at 700 Hull Road in Ormond Beach.
Bulldogs finish Top 5 at pre-state track event
The Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs boys placed third, and the girls took fourth place at the Pre-Fuel by Gatorade Invite on Saturday, April 8, at the IMG Academy.
In girls competition, Courtney Gales placed third in 400-meter dash; Namiah Simpson and Skye Green, third and fifth in 300-meter hurdles; in 4x400 relay (Simpson, Gales, Susan Kauffman and Summer Wells), first; 4x800 relay (Kauffman, Simpson, Gales and Kylie DeDeo), first.
In boys competition, John Craig and Benjamin Barthellemy placed third and fourth in high jump; Frank Clark, first in long jump; Michael Peppin, first, discus throw; Peppin, third in shot put; Darrell Thomas, third, in 300-meter hurdles; 4x400 relay (Christopher Musial, Levi Burton, Shawn Gordon and Thomas), fifth; Gordon, second, 800-meter run.
FPC will host its district tournament at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, at FPC.
Lady Pirates win softball championship and continue to roll
The Matanzas Pirates won the silver bracket championship at the 26-team Doc4Life Showdown Softball Tournament on Saturday, April 8, in Ocala.
The Pirates (15-7) defeated Vanguard -3-0 for the championship, finishing 3-1 for the weekend. Madison Bodin Madison Bodin allowed four hits, struck out five batters and didn’t allow any walks.
Matanzas recently beat district foe Seabreeze 5-3 Monday, April 10, in Ormond.
Matanzas had ten hits in the game. Alyssia Paiz, Samantha Olsen, and Alyssa Hubbard each collected multiple hits for Matanzas Pirates. Samantha Olsen led Matanzas Pirates with two runs batted in. She went 2-for-4 on the day.
