Matanzas is on another historic football run. This time, it’s Lady Pirates.
With their latest win — a 22-6 victory over crosstown rival Flagler Palm Coast on Monday, April 17, at Matanzas — the Pirates have won five of their first six games of the season, which is already a flag football best.
In coach Dan Toblin’s first season, Matanzas went 4-6 in 2013. That record stood as the program’s best until Matanzas won its first five games this season. The Pirates have never made any serious threats to win a district championship. But, based on their currently play, Toblin and the Pirates are playing with confidence.
“This is the most special team we’ve ever had in Matanzas history,” Toblin said, “and I think we can take this as far as we choose to take it. We’ve made great strides.”
Stacked with complimentary players, the Pirates might have two of the most athletic players in the area in sophomore quarterback Jaida Reddin and senior receiver Miracle Porter, the soccer great.
“Having talent like Miracle and Jaida is something special,” Toblin added. “I almost blush when I talk about those two.”
Porter didn’t play, when the Pirates fell to Mainland 14-12 on Thursday, April 13. Even Mainland’s head coach Scott Wilson acknowledged it would’ve been a different game, had she been involved.
Reddin has improved her game since last year, and every team struggles to pull her flag, as she maneuvers around the pocket and down the field.
“As long as I can make a little impact and get everybody going, that’s how I can make a difference,” Reddin said.
“She’s starting to put it all together,” Toblin added.
