They Flagler Palm Coast girls had to wait an entire year for the opportunity to erase the memory of losing last season’s district championship by a point. Well, the wait is over, and the Lady Bulldogs are back atop District 1-4A after running past their district foes on Tuesday, April 18, at FPC.
“I’m very proud of the girls,” coach David Halliday said. “They missed on the tittle by a point last year, and they won in 2015, so the program is on the rise.”
With the win, the girls have now won two district titles in the last three years, and it takes coach David Halliday’s district title total to 12 at FPC between boys and girls.
The Lady Bulldogs stayed on the field to celebrate their championship nearly an hour after the finals had concluded. The talk surrounded the close loss from last year and their ability to win it this year.
“It felt good to come back and do big things,” said junior Namiah Simpson, who won all three of her events. “We worked really hard at practice, so to get this made us feel like all the hard work paid off.”
The boys lost out on first place by 13 points to Sandalwood. Halliday said they left some points on the board but nevertheless had some fantastic performances.
Matanzas also had championship performances. While both teams placed runner-up, the Pirates had several girls and boys win individual championships, including Jacob Miley, who beat supposed district rival Payne Meyer by nearly five seconds in the 800-meter run.
Leading up to regionals, both the Bulldogs and Pirates will get at least a week’s rest and will try to send as many athletes to states from regionals. FPC will host its region meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at FPC, and Matanzas will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland.
DID YOU KNOW? This girls track team is the only FPC girls team sport to win a district championship this school year.
