After qualifying for the Babe Ruth World Series in Jensen Beach, Florida, the Port Orange Lady Panthers were elated and surprised.

Port Orange qualified by going undefeated through the state tournament, securing 14-0 shutout victories against Northwest Florida and Oviedo, then back to back victories of 10-2 and 12-0 against Clermont.

The Lady Panthers finished in 5th place during the tournament in Jensen Beach and even more importantly, won the team sportsmanship award on behalf of the tournament.

In addition, 1st baseman Rachael Norwood was named to the all-defensive team.

The team will be recognized at the August 15 Port Orange City Council meeting, and all players will be present.

"The entire thing was awesome," head coach Mike Belus said. "The team had a home run hit, had a defensive player win an award and got other awards too. It was the experience of a lifetime."
