Kula Yoga instructor Michele Guess wants to be able to share something with her son.

Guess has been involved with yoga for the past 15 years. Kula Yoga is a studio that has catered to the needs of its adult customers, but now it’s doing what it can to empower younger students.

Guess is the owner of Kula Yoga Kids, a new after-school program by the studio to help young yogis become one with themselves and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere after a day at school. She has a doctorate in pharmacy from Mercer, but now she's focusing on her little boy.

“I have a five-year old boy named Luke, so that’s my background in kids,” Guess said.

The after-school program will start on the first day of school on Aug. 14. The session will be from 2:30 to 5:30 every day where Guess and other staffers will give kids time to do their homework, offer snacks and give the opportunity to focus their minds during intimate yoga sessions.

“It’s been something our community at Kula has been asking about for a long time,” Guess said.

Guess, 41, is primarily a teacher of aerial yoga, which involves a subject suspending themselves from a hammock made of cloth that is pinned to the ceiling.

Guess had a very serious skiing accident in her late 20’s, and yoga was her way to heal.

“It causes a lot of healing and decompression in the spine,” Guess said. “I thought it was something that was too important not to share with others.”

Kula Yoga Kids have their own van in which Guess will pick up the kids from school. She bought the van used and knew a friend at Valor Signs who could help her decorate it.

Along with Guess, fellow instructor Jeff Fedora will help out with the Kula Yoga Kids program.

Fedora began at Kula as a student about four years ago, and his background in philosophy pairs well to his relationship to yoga.

He has a son named Sage, and he understands the need to build up a child in the way it needs to go.

“By giving the children simple, repeatable practices it gives the kids a whole lot of power as they grow and mature through life,” Fedora said. “And even if it’s a holding space for kids to just be able to breathe, then that’s great too.”
