Port Orange's new Thank You Five Theater is teaming up with the Creative Happiness Institute for an open mic night and live music.
"The Start of Labor" will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, at the TY5 Theater. Poets, singers and songwriters will be able to take to the stage to try and win the cash prize for best performance of the night. The event is being held on to celebrate the holiday weekend. "The Start of Labor" was able to take place thanks in part to a grant from the Cultural Council of Volusia County.
The night will also feature singer and songwriter Claire Sandiver and her band, in addition to poetry from members of the group Breaking Bad who will be reprising poems they performed at the National Slam Championship competition where they represented Volusia County.
Volusia Poet Laureate David B. Axelrod, the director of the Creative Happiness Institute, said he enjoys seeing people in the community getting up to perform, especially when it is their first time. He said it provides an opportunity for anyone to perform without being judged.
"You may be the witness to people giving birth to great talent," Axelrod said. "We're going to start the labor and you never quite know what's going to come out when you're done."
Admission is $5. TY5 Theater is located at 4606 Clyde Morris Blvd. For more information on the entertainment and open mic, email David Axelrod at [email protected], or call 386-337-4567.
