Journey Fitness Center wants to make one thing clear — it is not a gym.
Around nine months ago, Richard Boyd and Mary Hall decided to pursue personal fitness training their own way.
“We are not a gym,” co-owner Richard Boyd said. “We didn’t want this to look like a gym. We’re all different and we’re very family-oriented. We definitely want to celebrate the members, because it’s all about them."
“We are not a gym. We didn’t want this to look like a gym. We’re all different."
- Richard Boyd, co-owner of Journey Fitness
After working in the corporate world of LA Fitness, Boyd and Hall were employed by a local fitness center and discovered that clients wanted more privacy and more focused training.
They now co-own Journey Fitness, and after nine months, the business is thriving with several positive testimonials from clients. Their secret lies in the personal relationships with the people they train.
“I think, for us, it’s imperative that we never forget why we’re here,” Boyd said. “It’s easy to get busy and overwhelmed, and it’s about thinking about why we quit those cushy corporate jobs to do this.”
The location of Journey Fitness is off the beaten path. It takes several turns on backroads to get to it, and that’s what makes it unique. In his own words, Boyd says that Journey Fitness isn’t a pizza joint and doesn’t need to be lit up with a huge sign for everyone to see. This business operates differently. It’s about personalized, private training and tailoring that for each and every client that walks through the door, on an appointment-only basis.
“The way we wanted to do it is build a package for them as far as their goals and what they can afford,” co-owner Hall said. "Some people want to come once a week and others four times a week."
As an example, Boyd was working with Pat Kelly on Monday. Kelly is a senior client who has been working with Boyd since January. She is training for the Ormond Beach Senior Games and enjoys circuit training. She has had success in gaining strength and speed in her 100-meter runs.
Boyd and Hall are the only two trainers at the facility so far. The next step is to continue to scale, add more trainers and continue to be a destination for gym-goers who want something different.
"We’re different, and what we have to offer is different, but people want to know you and like you." Boyd said. “Our folks say it’s like coming to your house and being there."
