A potential partnership between the Port Orange Family YMCA and the Palmer College of Chiropractic could provide students and staff of the college with discounted memberships in the near future.
According to Diana Martin, executive director for the Port Orange Family YMCA, the partnership has not yet been finalized but is expected to be official sometime before the end of August.
Students and staff will have access to YMCA locations throughout Volusia County. Palmer College members will also receive three complimentary visits with certified wellness staff in addition to member rates of child care programs, sports leagues, camps and instructional classes as well as unlimited group exercise classes.
The Palmer College campus in Port Orange was opened in 2002 and now has more than 800 students.
According to Martin, the college had previously approached the YMCA about the partnership but it wasn't until this past July that the two organizations had been able to finalize what this contract would look like. Martin said she had also spoken with the YMCA's former executive director who had previously been in discussion with the college about the partnership. Martin noted that she was informed the YMCA and college had tried three or four times to form some kind of partnership but it was never set up.
Martin said the college has a similar partnership with a YMCA in another location. She noted the partnership would be based on a year-to-year contract. She added that the price range is by age, which would amount to $6 for a monthly adult membership and $34 for a family membership.
"For the students and employees, they're right here," Martin said. "We all share the same parking lot, we've always had a partnership where our staff can go there and get care for free, so it was just the best thing."
According to the YMCA's press release, the college will cover a portion of the membership cost for the staff and students.
"It's going to be a good partnership," Martin said. "We're ecstatic."
The Palmer College of Chiropractic has not yet released an official statement on the partnership.
