As Iggy walked through the Halifax Humane Society’s Thrift Store on Saturday, he wasn’t looking for a good deal – he was looking for a new home.
Iggy is one of many pups, and cats, from the shelter on LPGA Blvd., who was brought to the fourth annual anniversary celebration to remind everyone the mission of the thrift store, and maybe sniff out a prospective adopter for himself.
Store manager Meg Evans said the Ormond location has been a blessing, not only because of its location in the Ace Hardware shopping center on Granada Blvd., but also because of the support the organization has received.
“The Ormond Chamber and MainStreet Ormond have both been incredibly supportive.” Evans said. “This is the third location for the thrift store and the third time has been the charm.”
The thrift store is one many of the society’s award winning programs, that include the Redinger Clinic, Prison Pups n Pals, and new programs are being added with the expansion of the shelter.
Patrick Riley, of the Riley and Kimmie online talk show, volunteered at the event for the second year. Gotti, one of the adoptable pups, decided Riley was the owner for him and set his mind to getting a new home. Riley now has one more dog.
Bosia Holl searched out Evans to show her nearly new blouses she had found. Holl, one of Evan’s “regulars,” said the friendliness of the staff and the quality of items she finds keeps bringing her back.
“It is a way for me to help and make a difference,” Holl said. “Just because I don’t have pets right now doesn’t mean I can’t help.”
Evans echoed that sentiment, saying that many of her customers and donors are individuals who don't go out to the shelter, but still care about the animals.
“We accept donations seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” Evans said. “We also have pickup for furniture or a large amount of items, every Tuesday and Saturday by appointment.”
Donations do need to be clean, and appliances in working condition. Evans, who has a degree and background in marketing, said not everything that comes in ends up on the sales floor.
“We take the time to research items so we can get the most we can for them. We have online selling on eBay and Poshmark,” Evans said. “We want to be sure that we are maximizing the donations we receive.”
Along with donated items, the thrift store sells Blackwood dog food and new pet supplies.
Evans said those who may have missed the event need not worry.
“We have storewide specials every day, and there is 50% off different categories,” she said. “There is always a good deal to be had here and your purchase supports the animals.”
