As a perennial powerhouse in Class 6A high school football, Mainland is once again going to be quite the team to watch in 2017. Two of the team’s wide receivers, D’Marcus Adams (FSU) and Tank Dell (FIU), are committed to Division 1 schools. With an accurate senior quarterback in Jake Novello leading the pack, Mainland should continue to be a potent offensive threat. Led on defense by four-star safety Johnathan Huggins, who recently just received his official offer letter from FSU, the 2017 Buccaneers will simply have a lot more firepower than a majority of the teams they will see during the regular season. For Mainland, the state playoffs seem to be a certainty.

Last season’s record: 1-9 (1-4 District)
In the words of Seabreeze head football coach Troy Coke, the 2016 season being disappointing would be the understatement of the century. After a 1-9 campaign, the Sand Crabs have nowhere to go but up. With Coke leading the team’s offense, he realizes the team will have to rebound from last season’s debacles, one of which included a 70-7 beatdown as the hands of city rival Mainland. With safety Jalen Miranda leading the team in tackles the past two seasons, Seabreeze will look to its defense as an anchor. But the Sand Crabs averaged a measly 8.6 points per game in 2016, and in order to prevent a defense from being constantly winded, they will simply have to score more, or at least be able to keep their offense on the field.

Coach’s take: “For me, it’s continuing to try to build a culture and getting the kids to understand what it takes to win at this level. We have to be better on offense, so that’s step one. We have to score points if we want to win.” - Seabreeze head coach Troy Coke
