When Cheryl Robel's home was destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in October of 2016 it was difficult to keep up with fundraisers for the animal charity she'd helped start.

To help Robel keep up with her animal welfare organization, a group of locals have come together to raise money for their friend. On Saturday, Aug. 19, more than $200 was raised during a Quarters for a Cause event, according to Sharon Morris, one of the people who spearheaded the fundraiser.

Morris had met Robel when she found a stray kitten and needed to get it spayed, something Robel was helping with in the community.

In August of 2000, Robel, along with Diane Voigt, had founded Concerned Citizens for Animal Welfare of Volusia County to reduce animal overpopulation through "affordable and accessible spaying and neutering."

Morris, along with a group of local women, decided to help Robel's organization by taking the fundraising into their own hands and starting their own event.

The group held Quarters for a Cause at the Port Orange VFW to raise money for the charity, which focuses on stray, abandoned and abused animals while also working to stop euthanizations.

"In March I was thinking about it and talking with a friend and said we could help Cheryl raise money for her organization," Morris said. "I knew they needed help and I knew so many people that don't have the means to get their animals spayed and neutered, especially when you find a stray cat or kitten."

According to Morris, stepping in to help with the fundraiser was a new experience. She said another friend, who has experience in the wedding industry, used her connections to find sponsors and the event had the green light.

The Quarters for a Cause event let people shop and bid on donated items, from local businesses and independent consultants, for a quarter. The auction included items from home goods to essential oils to health products. Before the bidding, which started at 6:30 p.m., participants were able to browse vendors' items, which they could also purchase.

"I think it went really good," Morris said. "We had a lot of happy patrons go out the door."
