Sunday, Sept. 17, at the All Saints Lutheran Church in Port Orange is going to be different from past Sundays.
At 3 p.m. church members and anyone wants to join will come together to sing hymns to raise money to fight breast cancer. The "Hymn Festival" is a fundraiser to raise money for the American Cancer Society and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer organization.
The "free-will donation" event was headed up by Luanne Lundy, a retired health insurance professional and a volunteer at American Cancer Society. Lundy said she decided to put on the event because her sister and niece are breast cancer survivors.
"I've never done anything like this," Lundy said. "The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, the big walk that's at the end of October, is very near and dear to my heart."
Lundy said the walk in New York, where she is originally from, is an especially large event that takes participants through Central Park. It was the walk and hearing about a hymn festival her sister had attended, along with a love for music and singing, that led Lundy to ask church leaders if she could put on an event to support the fight against breast cancer.
The event, which should last about an hour to an hour and a half, was approved by the church and the American Cancer Society. Lundy has since sent out invitations to 35 area churches inviting members to join them on Sept. 17.
Hymn Festival is a first for the church and, according to Lundy, a way to provide "comfort for survivors and people that know people affected by breast cancer."
Lundy noted that faith is also important to her and explained she wanted to let others know about "God giving peace to people with cancer."
The hymns, such as "Amazing Grace" and "On Eagle's Wings," will be led by the church's organist, Rita Taylor, and Choir Director Julia Hood.
"People who are committed to the Making Strides event also do independent fundraisers," Lundy said. "So I wanted to do one that was connected with my church in some way shape for form. We'd love to have a full church of people singing."
