A new petition urging Volusia County Schools to be more lenient with the current dress code has received 21 signatures as of Tuesday, Dec. 5.
According to the online letter, on Change.org, the petition was written by student Brendan Wixson.
"Let the student speak, give us our freedom back," Wixson wrote in the petition, adding, "We want the right to wear what we desire."
The superintendent received an email from Change.org notifying him about the petition.
According to Nancy Wait, Volusia County Schools Community Information Services director, there are no changes planned in regards to the dress code.
In the petition there is a mention of a student being detained for not wearing a shirt that followed dress code policy. While the incident was not confirmed, Wait wrote in an email that, regarding discipline, "there are consequences associated with violating the policy, which has been in place since the 2016-17 school year."
This is the second year the dress code has been in place, which is required for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Atlantic High Principal Stephen Hinson wrote in an email that the petition had not previously reached his office.
