United Way Volusia County’s Women United Flagler chapter collected 12,924 pounds of food through its Chicks with Cans fall food drive.
Each year, the organization uses the monetary donations raised to purchase food through Second Harvest Food Bank. This year, Women United ensured the food was purchased for Feed Flagler to provide traditional Thanksgiving meal staples.
The Palm Coast Yacht Club held a bowling tournament fundraiser that raised $2,172 for the local chapter of Disabled American Veterans. A check will be presented to the DAV this week. Nearly 100 Palm Coasters participated in the Jingle Bell Bowl on Dec. 3, 2017. The community-wide event was held at Palm Coast Lanes, 11 Old Kings Road N.
Teams of five competed during the tournament which featured raffles and prizes provided by Hibbett Sports of Palm Coast.
Local Chapter 86 of the Disabled American Veterans provides services including counseling, transportation assistance and the resources of a food bank to its members in the Palm Coast area.
Representatives of the Daughters of the American Revolution honored a pair of high school students Nov. 29 with the organization’s Good Citizen Awards. Libby Broadhurst, Good Citizen Chairwoman and Margo York, Regent of the Old Kings Highway DAR Chapter presented the awards to Mia Scarcella of Flagler Palm Coast High School and Charles Wicker of Matanzas High School.
Imagine School at Town Center recognized its 2017-2018 Rookie Teacher of the Year, Sara Belak (Kindergarten Teacher); Support Staff of the Year, Nicole Puritis (Front Desk Receptionist); and Teacher of the Year, Stephanie Batista (5th Grade ELA/SS Teacher).
The women were nominated by their peers for the position and interviewed by a staff member from another Imagine Schools campus to determine the final honorees for the 2017-2018 school year.
The residents of Brookdale, an assisted living community in Palm Coast, were treated to a spectacular holiday show on Nov. 29 by students from Flagler Palm Coast High School.
Members of the school jazz band, under the direction of Mr. Schulz, performed Christmas carols. The musicians included Sawyer Perry, Saxon Swartic, Sean Callahan, Jordan Killmer, Sam Mazella and Frankie Glancy.
The singers, under the leadership of Choral Director Ms. Fullmer, included Nick Aiello, Michael Mendoza, Martha Lopez, Emily Orocozo and Samantha Schumaker. They performed a rendition of “The Christmas Song.”
Flagler High’s Visual Arts Teacher, Mr. Beckett, introduced three top students; Ben Ward, Kayla Fair and Madi Imperio to give presentations of their creative works to the audience.
A swing dance routine was performed by the FPC dancers choreographed by dance teacher Ms. Monsanto. The dancers were Stephanie Branch, Solanch Delgado, Brian Phillippe, Ashley Gilbert, Kailen Jackson, Yireh Martinez, Alexa Isidore, Julian Hamilton, Christina DiBuono, Jaclyn Dotson, Beth Recker, Alexa Zeak, Sierra Storms and Zandra Rooney.
This year’s “Festival of Trees” at the Main Branch Library in Palm Coast will have a centennial flair to honor the founding families of Flagler County for its 100th anniversary. The festival began at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, and the trees will remain on display through December.
“This is an annual tradition sponsored by both the Library and the Friends of the Library,” said Flagler County Library Director Holly Albanese in a press release. “We feature many trees that are decorated by local non-profit organizations. We will have a special Centennial Tree this year so that any of Flagler County’s founding families can place an ornament on the tree to represent their family.”
County Commissioner Nate McLaughlin provided musical entertainment at the beginning of Friday’s kick-off event while the Centennial Committee recapped the events that added sparkle to the yearlong celebration of Flagler County’s history.
