A new assisted living facility has broken ground in Port Orange and is expected to be completed in around nine to 10 months.

Benton House, which will be owned and managed by Principal Senior Living Group, had an official ground breaking on Thursday, Nov. 30, with the Port Orange - South Daytona Chamber of Commerce at 812 Airport Road.

The company operates 20 assisted living communities, with plans for another to be built in the St. Johns area. Banks said a groundbreaking for the St. Johns community is expected to take place after the first of the year.

The new community will have 59 apartments with 14 specialized memory care apartments, known as the Beacon Neighborhood. These 14 apartments will have a coordinator who will focus on activities for residents will memory impairment, according to Regional Director of Community Relations Julia Banks.

"Residents that move into our community will let us know their desires and we'll provide a service plan," Banks said. "We'll be providing for their desires and their needs."

The facility will be on one level and will follow the same layout as other Benton House facilities. Banks said this makes it easier when individuals have to transfer from one location to another.

There will also be an activities director who will focus on daily actives for the residents, something Banks said is a very high priority for the company.

Banks said they are currently hiring and are accepting applications. She said they expect to hire between 40 and 50 employees.

"We just really want to serve the seniors in that area," Banks said. "That's our ultimate goal and to do it well."
