A $12,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation has been awarded to the Port Orange Police Department for DUI and Impaired Driving enforcement.

As part of the enforcement effort, POPD officers, with specialized training in detection and apprehension of impaired driving, will conduct three DUI checkpoints within Port Orange, according to a press release. Locations and times will be determined by an analysis of previous crashes and DUI arrests.

According to statistics from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, someone is injured every two minutes and a person is killed every 51 minutes in DUI related crashes.

The department will also conduct monthly saturation patrols that focus on drunk and impaired driving. Money from the grant will cover the overtime costs for officers to staff the check points and saturation patrols.

Additionally, the police department will have an awareness campaign with a goal to deter individuals from driving impaired.

"As a home to more than 60,000 residents and countless visitors each day, it is the goal of the Port Orange Police Department to reduce instances of drunk and impaired driving to ensure the greatest level of safety and quality of life for residents and visitors alike," according to the press release.
