After about seven months the new Selah Living at the Ranch assisted living had its grand opening on Wednesday, Dec. 6.
The assisted living facility, 3617 Joan Lane, is a renovated home that was bought by James and Christy Richard. Three years ago, the couple, both registered nurses, bought another house that they turned into their first assisted living facility.
The husband and wife team had several major influences that pushed them to open two assisted living facilities. The first was their nursing background, especially James' background working in hospice. What also drove the couple was seeing the condition of local assisted living facilities.
"We had had an experience in some of the area nursing homes that was less than desirable," Christy said. "It just showed us the need in the area. It was something that just stuck with us."
According to Christy, the assistant administrator, they decided to use a house as the assisted living space in order for the individuals living there to feel like it was their home and not a nursing home. She added that the new home will be run like the first with a concierge style service with private beds, restrooms and wheelchair access.
Currently there is a waiting list and the couple expects Selah to be up and running by mid December. The home-based care is, according to Christy, a part of the concierge service that is all-inclusive. However, she said they are able to offer more services because of the couple's background. She noted that her husband, who is the administrator, will check on residents several times a day making sure they have what they need.
"This has been a dream of ours since we started nursing school," Christy said. "We wanted to change the level of care for the elderly."
