When Hurricane Matthew hit, the Bonkerz Comedy Club was left without a home and the owners, Joe and Margaret Sanfelippo, began looking for a new location to host their shows. Due to their strong market base in Daytona, the husband and wife team wanted to stay in the area.
Then, out of the blue, they got a call from the new owner of the Port Hole, 932 Herbert St., in Port Orange saying he needed entertainment for the bar. the Sanfellippos needed a venue and, after seeing the building, they struck a deal. According to Joe, the day he and the Port Hole owner signed the agreement, he posted about the new venue and received 700 responses in 24 hours.
"We know it's a good market for us, and we just want to be back there," Joe said. "And Port Orange is a great place."
The couple started the Bonkerz Comedy Clubs in Orlando and have since expanded not only to the east coast but to Las Vegas as well. They had been running their comedy club in Daytona for 17 years and 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of the Bonkerz clubs.
Bonkerz Comedy Club in Port Orange will reopen on Sunday, Dec. 31, with a special New Year's Eve show.
After the initial event, there will be shows at 9 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, beginning Jan. 5.
