Port Orange Police Sergeant Steven Nagy was recently presented with an Award for Achievement after helping prevent a suicide from taking place.

Nagy was presented with the award at the Tuesday, Dec. 12, City Council meeting.

On Tuesday, August 29, Nagy responded to the call of a suicidal male. The caller told authorities her husband said that he wanted to commit suicide by hanging himself.

Arriving at the scene, Nagy found the man hanging from a yellow rope that was tied to the staircase in their home. Nagy immediately cut the man down, removed the rope from around his neck and straightened his body on the floor to allow him to breath.

The male regained consciousness and began to breathe on his own.

Port Orange Fire Rescue and EVAC arrived and transported the subject to Halifax Hospital.

"Sergeant Steven Nagy’s attention to detail and quick actions were instrumental in getting the victim the medical attention he needed and saving his life," Public Information Officer Evan Doyle wrote in a press release. "The Port Orange Police Department takes great pride in presenting Sergeant Steven Nagy with this Award of Achievement."
