Creative Happiness Institute and Thank You Five Theater are getting a head start on 2018 with a New Year's celebration on Saturday, Dec. 30.
The evening event, funded by the Volusia County Cultural Council, will feature a band as well as provide an opportunity for singers and comedians to take the stage during an open mic. A $50 prize will be given for the best performance.
Singer Emily Snodgrass will also be performing with John Collins on guitar and Keith McGrane on drums.
Volusia Poet Laureate David B. Axelrod, the director of the Creative Happiness Institute, will host the open mic.
"We have featured a slam artist each event at TY5. For December 30, I'm giving a little holiday gift of my own," Axelrod said. "I'm bringing back my comedy-poetry act fron the 80s when I did standup comedy. Of course, I'm not mentioning how that act closed comedy clubs permanently."
