As Molly Harich rings the Salvation Army bell outside Walmart in Palm Coast, she sings Christmas carols to lighten the atmosphere. Shoppers scurry by, and only some offer a small grin or spare change. But Harich’s holiday spirit isn’t deterred.
“It just makes it more fun,” she said about caroling.
This is the first year the Palm Coast resident has worked with the Salvation Army, but her husband, Freddy Harich, has done so for a few years. The newlywed pair stands outside each of the two Walmart entrances while collecting donations just about every day through Dec. 23.
She has epilepsy, and he has a brain condition. Molly said that due to their conditions, they periodically look across the busy entrance ways about 10 times a day to blow each other a kiss, as a way of checking in.
Molly has always loved singing, so she didn’t give it a second thought to sing while she collected donations. As a child, she would sing at church with her two sisters while her father played the piano.
Freddy likes to stick to just wishing shoppers a Merry Christmas.
“If I sang carols, they’d just walk the other way,” he joked.
