After two years with the Spruce Creek football team, defensive coordinator D.J. Mayo is returning to the head coaching ranks.
Mayo, who helped coach a 2017 Hawks squad to an 8-2 record and a playoff berth, accepted a position as the next head coach of the Atlantic Sharks, the school announced on Friday, Dec. 15.
"I'm pretty excited to get back into it," Mayo said. "Once our season ended, I shifted my focus toward some head coaching opportunities. ... I really feel like Atlantic has the potential to do great things. They just needed the right guy."
Mayo, 36, replaces ex-head coach Kendall Bradley, who was at the helm of a Sharks team that went 0-10 during the 2017 season. Mayo was previously the head coach at Chamberlain in 2012 and Warner Christian in 2014.
This season, Mayo's defense surrendered just 17.4 points per game.
Mayo said he knows the challenge of turning around an Atlantic team that gave up 53.6 points per game and lost more than 50% of its roster throughout the season.
"We're going to control the things we can control," he said. "But that said, I'd like to be playing meaningful football in October."
After 10-straight losses, Spruce Creek's boys basketball team has finally come out victorious. The Hawks (1-10) defeated rival New Smyrna Beach 66-64 on the night of Monday, Dec. 18, at Spruce Creek High School. The Hawks were coming off of a 20-point loss to Colonial on Dec. 15 and a four-point loss to Palm Bay on Dec. 16.
After opening the season with a loss, the Sharks' boys basketball team has won its last nine games in a row. The Sharks dominated their last opponent, taking down Grace Baptist Academy 77-51 on Dec. 16.
The girls team improved to 5-1 on the season with convincing wins in the Umatilla Holiday shootout, blowing by South Lake 61-10 on Dec. 15 and Tavares 71-34 on Dec. 16.
