When Erica Scudder was 5, she would set up a classroom in her living room and make her sister and brother do homework. For the last four years, she’s made that childhood classroom come to life at Buddy Taylor Middle School.
“I’m the nerd who couldn’t wait for summer to end,” she said. “I love learning, and being a teacher, you’re constantly learning.”
As a seventh-grade advanced civics teacher and the Civics Department head, Scudder has revamped the program to make the school’s scores competitive when compared to Indian Trails Middle School, she said.
“(The department) compares data and sees exactly what needs to be improved and where we’re struggling,” Scudder said. “So, that’s really helped.”
For Scudder, teaching is a passion that will never get old, no matter how tedious the task is.
“I just love it,” she said. “I love everything about it — the planning, the grading, everything.”
Her secret for her energy to push through the long days? Lots of coffee.
