In his 25 years with The Ginn Corp., John Subers moved eight times. During those years, Subers helped organize golf tournaments for the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and Champions Tour. Every few years meant a new city for Subers, his wife and three boys.
Until they found Flagler County.
“I was a road warrior for a long, long time,” said Subers, who helped organize high-profile tournaments like the PGA’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. “Getting off the road was a part of the decision to stay in Flagler County — in paradise.”
In 2009, Subers accepted a position with Florida Hospital Flagler, and in those near nine years, he has wedged himself into the fabric of the community in more ways than one.
He’s involved in the Rotary Club of Flagler County and is set to be announced as the chairman of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 19.
But as his primary job, Subers works as the executive director of the FHF Foundation, a group that raises money and helps link the community to the services the hospital provides.
Subers said he’s always enjoyed being so involved throughout the community.
“I think it’s my personality. It’s the right thing to do,” he said. “And my role in the hospital is to link with the community. Being involved in these organizations is fun for me, but it also serves the purpose of what I need to bring back in value to Florida Hospital Flagler and what their role is in our community. They all run together for the objective of engaging the community and building relationships. It all kind of fits together. But, yeah, there’s a lot of irons in the fire.”
Subers has plans to continue to deepen his relationships with the community in 2018. But all in all, he said he only plays a small part in a much, much grander operation. Subers acts as a sort of conduit between the hospital and the many people it services.
“It’s not all about me, certainly,” he said. “There’s a lot of people that touch the community within this organization. The physicians here are doing that every day. If I can just help grow in my circle of influence and help make people’s knowledge of healthcare go a little bit more smoothly, then I’ll have done my job.
“I’m appreciative of the hospital in taking a golf guy and putting him into a healthcare service world.”
