Perego, the Ormond Beach artist known for his murals and performance live art shows, has completed a piece has that has achieved its own “celebrity.” It’s been featured on people.com, the website for the popular celebrity magazine, and hangs in the home of Angela Simmons, daughter of the legendary Joseph RUN Simmons of RUN/DMC and co-star in “Growing Up Hip-Hop,”
Simmons wanted a vibrant, inspirational work of art for her baby Sutton’s nursery and put out a call to artists, according to Perego.
Perego responded with art of the Cookie Monster in a rap pose to tie in with the famous RUN, one of the early hip hop artists. Saying he is an “old school fool,” Perego made it authentic, even putting pennies on the needle of the turntable. DJs of that era used the pennies to hold down the needle because the heavy bass they played would make the needle jump.
"It was an honor to paint for the royalty of the hip-hop culture" Perego. "My goal was to pay artistic homage to the cultural legacy of what Run/DMC created in music and fashion and also to paint something fun for the little guy to look at.”
Perego is known worldwide through his art and activism with Art Army (artarmy.org). His murals hang in the County Courthouse in DeLand; as well as local establishments such as 31 Supper Club, Grind and Kona Tiki Bar in Ormond Beach; and the Ocean Walk Garage in Daytona Beach.
Perego also welcomes small projects from local residents.
“I believe everyone should have art, not just the rich and famous,” he said. “I make are so anyone can afford it. Art can change people’s lives.”
Perego’s next live performance will be on Feb. 14 at City Arts Factory in Orlando and will be a “Valentine’s Couple’s Body Impression Workshop.” Information can be found on his Facebook page.
