There will be a lot of splashing at The YMCA pool from 3 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 11 as businesses, organizations, student groups and even Daytona Beach police will be doing cannonballs to show support for Kayne Finley, 17, of Ormond-by-the-Sea, who was diagnosed last fall with an inoperable brain tumor. The event will also raise awareness of pediatric brain cancer.
Schmancy Pops and Southern State of Mind and Vitamina T — Tacos on Wheels food trucks will donate a percentage of their sales to the cause, and several companies have donated prizes for a raffle.
Drivers have probably noticed the message promoting the event on the State Farm sign on West Granada Boulevard east of Nova Road. This sign has become a landmark over the decades with its changing message promoting events. The tradition goes back to previous owners, and State Farm agent Ryan Ochipa has continued it, normally changing it weekly. For the past few weeks, however, it has promoted “Cannonballs for Kayne.” Ochipa came up with the idea for the event after learning about Kayne, who swims on Daytona Beach Speed Swimming with his son.
Kayne has undergone radiation, but the tumor is expected to return, and now he is now taking part in a clinical trial in Cincinnati. He plans to be at the event.
