Lady Green Wave basketball win district final in OT
In its first year in the district, Father Lopez Lady Green Wave upset New Smyrna Beach (went 12-0 in district play) 51-58 in overtime to capture the District 5-7A championship on Friday, Feb. 3, at Pine Ridge.
The Green Wave (21-7) lost both of their regular season meetings against NSB — including a 44-29 loss in January.
Throughout the district final, Lopez enjoyed a lead, but NSB used a 15-4 fourth quarter to force overtime, where Lopez made enough plays to hand NSB its first district loss of the season.
“I was really happy for the girls,” said coach Brad Ridenour, who has led Lopez to 12 district champions. “We've battled a lot of injuries this season, including losing our second leading scorer (Taylor Williams, 13.7 PPG) for the season right before our second game against NSB.”
Sophomore Lexi Duckett led the Green Wave with 17 points. Tierra White added 11 points and nine rebounds, and Madison Patrick had nine points and eight rebounds. Madi Camporese added eight points and seven assists.
The Green Wave will host Auburndale in the region quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Lopez.
